Last Wednesday, 14th Jan 2015, was a special day for Little Bodhi Student Care. This was the day we welcomed the author and the illustrator of Sherlock Sam to our centre. This special occasion was the finale for our special reading programme, carried out last year under the partnership with volunteers from Singapore American School Reading Club, Room to Read, and Tusitala Books.
The aim of this special reading programme is to help Little Bodhi students develop interests in reading and build up a good reading habit. Each child from upper primary in our centre was given a book named, Sherlock Sam and the Missing Heirloom in Katong by Tusitala Books. It is a detective fiction book, which has captured the hearts of many young local readers recently.
Adan Jimenez and Felicia Low, the author and the illustrator of Sherlock Sam, are a husband-and-wife team. After our students gave them a warm welcome, they proceeded to give an interesting workshop on how to create characters of a story book. The students were guided to create their own story characters based on three main factors, appearance, psychology and background. The activity successfully ended with an autograph session. Each P4-P6 student was then given the second book of the Sherlock Sam Series.
In the coming months, we will strive to plan more activities of this nature to help the students develop interests in reading and to encourage them to read beyond text books.
