Little Bodhi Student Care Centre(LBSCC) celebrated Children’s Day on 14 October. Everyone was looking forward to the celebration. We were told that we would be having a fun fair with game stalls and food stalls on that day!
Prior to the day, we could see Mrs Nas busy with the preparation. Two of our classmates, P6 students, Carrine and Yayuan, helped her with the Pokémon booth. They started preparing the items needed for the booth; they recycled food cans, and wrapped them up in colourful cellophane papers. They then pasted pictures of Pokémon characters on these cans. Finally, the two students decorated a poster for the booth. Seeing the completed Pokémon cans and poster for the booth, everyone waited with bated breath for the day to come.
The students had been divided into two groups, comprising of students from the different class. We were informed that while one group was playing the games in Section 1, the other group will be involved in art and craft activities in Section 2.
The day finally came. A group of volunteers from the NTU Buddhist Society(NTUBS) was at the centre. When we came back from school, we were thrilled to bits to see the two classroom transformed into a fun fair. This would be Section 1 where there were many game stalls. What was interesting to note was that all the games were upcycled from normal everyday household items like egg cartons, food cans and bottles among other. This was in line with what the teachers had taught us at the centre, to show care and concern for the environment by using less, and recycling and upcycling items.
All the students were given a coupon and we would be given a stamp upon completion of any game. At the end of the games, we could submit the coupon to exchange for prizes, isn’t that exciting? We could not wait to start! As soon as my friends entered Classroom 1, the game that caught our attention was of course the Pokémon stall. The cans were stacked up and the players had to use balls to knock the cans down. Another game was the ‘Fishing Game’. We had a lot of fun trying to fish as many marine creatures as we could within a minute using a u fishing rod. NTUBS volunteer, Big Brother Calvin had us in stitches as he encouraged us to hit the bullseye in the ‘Dart Game Stall’. Another crowd puller was the ‘Ping Pong Game’ where the player had to throw the ping pong balls into egg carton. Different spots on the carton accounted for different points. Another interesting game was the ‘Toss the Ring’. Bottles of different sizes were arranged at the game stall and the player had to stand behind a line to throw the three rings into the necks of the bottles. The best game for most of the student was the Mystery Dip. We were given only 1 minute to dip our hands into a Mystery Box. With the seconds ticking away quickly, we had to hastily grab a round mystery prize, which turned out to be cartoon figurines. We were so pleased with the unexpected gifts.
When we were at Section 2, we had a lot of fun coming up with origami animal figures and making our own ‘Scribbly wall’. I could see many potential Picassos in our midst too!
Apart from the game stalls, the teachers had prepared a variety of goodies and gifts for us to choose from. We were given a bag each and could chose whatever gifts we wanted from the food and gift stalls. The day ended with a lucky draw and 5 lucky students went back with prizes. It was our indeed a terrific Children’s Day celebration. We would like to thank Mrs Nas, the teachers and the NTUBS volunteers for making this day an unforgettable event for us.
