Little Bodhi Award and Presentation Day was held on 19 December 2020. In total, 25 awards were given out and 3 deserving students were the recipients of the Little Bodhi Student Care Centre (LBSCC) Bursary Awards.
This annual event is held to celebrate our Little Bodhi Stars, acknowledging not just their academic achievements but also their non-academic achievements. The point of award events such as this is to stress that one’s greatest test is always personal achievement. Little Bodhi applauds the award winners and lauds them for their consistent efforts and skills. However, we also want to highlight the growth and personal bests of our students. Hence the range of awards that were presented reflected all aspects of our students’ life. These awards also represent Little Bodhi’s mission of offering our students a holistic learning journey in a caring environment. It is hoped that this annual event will spur our students to maintain good behaviour and uphold values deemed important to us at LBSCC : respect, responsibility, loving, kindness, care and concern; the students will be spurred by their friends’ achievements and will work harder to better themselves in all areas.
This year’s event is significantly different from those held in previous years. In planning for the event, we were challenged with many restrictions due to the current Covid-19 situation, but we felt that this event which celebrates our students’ achievements and milestones, is too important to be given a miss. Thus, for the first time, the event was live-streamed to allow parents and students to join us in the celebration. All performances were pre-recorded and broadcasted later on the actual day. By stepping forward to participate in these performances, students would have learnt to work together as a team, and in the end, they would have learnt about perseverance, group work and team dynamics, patience, decision-making and many more. Looking at their own performances, they would deservedly feel a sense of pride and satisfaction at their achievements.
The event began with an opening speech by the centre supervisor, Mrs Nas who gave a review of the activities and programmes held in 2020. This was followed by a delightful rendition of “Xue Mao Jiao’ by students from Classroom 3 and an interesting poetry recitation, ‘Night Safari’ by students from Classroom 2, of what went on behind the scene at the Night Safari. Mr Chung Kok Hwee, Vice-Chairman of LBSCC graced the occasion by presenting the ‘Best Conduct’ and ‘Most Improvement (Non-Academic) awards, after which the upper primary students from Classroom 1 showed their moves as they danced to the popular song by BTS, ‘Dynamite’.
Next, 4 students from the various classes gave speeches about what Little Bodhi meant for them. Primary 4 student, Er Luo Yi, shared that though she had just joined Little Bodhi in September 2020, she ‘found herself settling with ease and comfort”. She shared how happy she was to have made many friends from different schools and was happy that she was exposed to interesting craftwork and projects as part of the activities held at the centre. Hor Cloey from Classroom 3 said, “Our aunties and uncle also took care of us by keeping the place clean and not forgetting the amazing food they prepared during lunch time.” Low Kang Sheng reminded his friends not to take their teachers for granted and to be grateful with how the Little Bodhi teachers had taken good care of the students. Lyvia Ng Jia Xuan, a Primary 5 student, summed it best when she described Little Bodhi as her ‘second home’.
The next performance was by the students from Classroom 3, whose performance had the audience tapping their feet along to the catchy song, ‘Fireworks’. The event then continued with the presentation of awards by Mr Toh Hong Seng, President of NTU Buddhist Society Alumni, followed by a short speech by Mr Toh. Next, 3 Primary 1 students took the centre stage with an interesting story,’ Two Goats at the Bridge’. Their actions had the audience tickled pink. Another dance item soon followed, and this time it was the Primary 4 and 5 students’ turn to show off their talents as they danced to their own choreography to the song, “See you again” as if to signals to the audience that the event is coming to a closure soon. The last performance of the day was by Classroom 2 who shared with us the “Secret of Happiness’. Finally, Mr Alan Ang, Chairman of LBSCC, gave out the the prestigious ‘Role Model’ awards and lastly, presented the recipients of this year’s LBSCC Bursary Award with a certificate and a cheque. The event ended with a speech by Mr Ang, who also thanked the parents for their support in this trying year as we faced the current situation. In his speech, Mr Ang urged students to value and treasure what they have, and value the time spent together with their parents and family members.
The event finally ended at 11.00 a.m. However, before the students headed home, they had fun taking photographs at our very own photo booth. The students definitely went home with many happy memories of the day.
